EDUCATION BACKGROUND

EDUCATION: Dr. Edgell’s education has helped him to pursue a successful career in economic development, business, and tourism. In summary, his education credentials span his working life as follows:

Bachelor of Science Degree in Business: his major interests were quantitative and qualitative methods which helped prepare him for major responsibilities in economic endeavors and business.

Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics: he began his career as an economist and completed this second degree by taking evening courses in economics in an effort to better understand labor economics and economic development.

Master of Public Administration: as he increased his responsibilities he became more involved in administration. He won the National Institute for Public Affairs Award allowing him to have a full salary and academic scholarship to pursue a graduate degree.

Doctor of Philosophy: As part of his executive development, the U.S. Department of Commerce sponsored him at full salary to work toward a doctorate degree program in management as he began to manage major departmental programs.

Post Graduate Study: Before assuming the responsibility in the U.S. Department of Labor as Director, Office of Research, Legislation and Program Policies he completed three separate education and training programs. First he was sent to the University of Michigan for a labor economics program in the College of Arts and Sciences. Second, he won an award to participate in a program to develop an econometric forecasting model at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Finally, he attended the eight week executive education program at the Federal Executive Institute in preparation for his increased duties in the federal government.

Later, he transferred to the U.S. Department of Commerce and eventually became the Acting Under Secretary of Commerce for Travel and Tourism. However, prior to assuming new and additional executive and management responsibilities, he participated in the Senior Management in Government program at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, at Harvard University.
